Who Am I?

I am currently a student at the greatest home on the plains, Auburn University, pursuing my bachelor's degree in Elementary Education while contemplating a minor in Spanish. My desire for my future is to pursue a masters in education along with either psychology, administration, or counseling. I hope to continue my passion for knowledge and the future of our society, our children, through a teaching position at a local elementary school in years to come.

Even though I reside in Auburn, Al, I am originally from lower Alabama by the bay and gulf. Mobile, AL was my home for the past eighteen years before college. I attended both private and public schools in Mobile County, and grew fond of the big southern city charm. The city of Mobile is such a historic and unique atmosphere to grow up in with the beautiful downtown area that is home to the celebration of Mardi Gras  and the gorgeous bay that is home to some of the best seafood.

My immediate family is rather small. I have two caring and supportive parents and one older sister who has been an inspiration to me. Even though my immediate family is small, I pride myself on having one of the largest and interesting extended families. On my mom's side, I have about seventy-five total members with several cousins on the way. On my dad's side, I have fifteen members. I have twenty aunts and uncles, about forty first-cousins, about twenty cousin inlaws, and about twenty second-cousins. I would not trade my family for anyone else's; having a huge family has given me patience, communication skills inlcuding expressing my opinions, experience with many young children, confidence, and a bright and exciting personality.

One of my greatest passions in life is to serve others. I love to do service work including mentoring and tutoring. I find such joy when I see the appreciation and happiness when I help others. I also gain even more knowledge, values, and eye-opening experiences from those that I help. I would describe myself as a compassionate and outgoing individual.  I have never been afraid to speak up or take on a leadership position in a group setting. One of my main goals when taking a leadership role is to ensure that every member has a role and feels essential to the work. I believe these qualities will lead me to be a teacher that will look out for every one of her students and to ensure their success in the future.

Why Did I Choose Teaching as a Profession?

I have always enjoyed helping others and volunteering with children. Growing up, I helped out at vacation bible school, leading a grade level or helping with different activities such as crafts or physical education. I also babysat for several families during high school. I always enjoyed leading and playing with younger children, but I really did not have any experience teaching others until my senior year of high school. In 2013, I began to tutor a freshmen in Spanish. I discovered it brought me such joy to help another grow in their knowledge and become successful. My decision to become a part of the education program was cemented spring semester of my freshmen year at Auburn. I began to volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club tutoring after school. With these kids, I began to truly see that I had a passion for teaching. I loved seeing the children grasp a new concept in reading or math. Each day when I would leave tutoring, I would feel such a love for life. I discovered that I am not overwhelmed by the behavior and difficulties of the students in a classroom. Rather, I adapted my behavior and instructions for the students. I discovered that I had the dispositions of patience, love, and appreciation for all the students in the classroom. I found that I am capable of disciplining the children while showing them my fun personality. I am eager and excited to begin my career as an elementary teacher and demonstrate my passion for knowledge and helping others.

Reflection

I chose to make my home page personal with the "Who I am" and "Why Did I choose Teaching as a Profession" sections to grab the attention of my website viewers. Some people may consider my introduction to be formal  to those looking to hire a teacher or the parents of my future students. However, I believe it demonstrates my relatability and unique and fun personality. It could be inferred from my website that I would be a teacher that could grab the attention of her students with a creative and fun teaching methods while still maintaining a professional atmosphere. I believe my homepage would attract the attention of viewers in a positive light to my individuality.
